"You had your game face on today." It's funny that someone who saw me before the Fit for Life 10K said that to me because I looked ecstatic that race day was finally here. Clearly, my game face has changed over the past decade because in High School I'm pretty it looked like I was going to cry before the gun went off because I was so nervous every time I raced.
Saturday was a bit different. Surprisingly, I wasn't nervous even though the Fit for Life 10K was six times longer than what I've been running on Thursday nights at the All Comers meets. I really was just excited to be there with no expectations other than to finish. When the gun went off I was in the zone. The goal? Don't go out too fast. Don't end up alone. (Someone I always end up alone in races with no one to chase.) Goals met. I had at least three different runners around me to let set the pace and finished in 50:54. To my surprise, that was good enough for a 4th place female finish and a 1st place finish in my age group! But the most important part was that I had fun. A ton of fun. No anxiety!
Goal #2 for the summer. Check! On to the next one!
