This website started as a passion project of mine last spring and admittedly, I've neglected it because life gets in the way sometimes. But then you get news that stops you dead in your tracks and makes you realize, that your life getting in the way is so insignificant in the grand scheme of things.
A few months ago, I was approached to be a local candidate for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Woman of the Year in the Treasure Valley. Over a 10-Week fundraising campaign, candidates raise THOUSANDS of dollars each for blood cancer research and patient services through the LLS. Thousands of dollars is a lot of pressure and I wanted to turn down the nomination because I was already overwhelmed with what's on my plate. Just when I was ready to bail, I saw a Facebook post that stopped me.
My friend George, who was my club DJ at Jay Jay's in Youngstown, was just diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia. His doctor saw bleeding on his retina during a routine eye exam. Weeks later, he discovered that bleeding was happening because he had cancer. I started crying as I read his Facebook post about his diagnosis. We used to go get breakfast after the club every Saturday and George was instrumental in helping me make some major life and career decision. I'd gotten to know his wife Tracy and his daughters, Julia and Alaura too. It just wasn't fair that someone so kind and caring has to battle an incredibly ugly disease. This changed everything. I had to accept the nomination now.
So here I am with 7.5 weeks left of fundraising to go. Every $1 I raise is 1 vote for me to become Woman of the Year and fund blood cancer research and patient services through the LLS. Can you help me in this battle with blood cancer? Your donations will help researchers find life saving cures/treatments for people like George and patient services for kids like last year's boy of the year, Clay Buie, that help kids that have completed their treatment readjust to going back to school.
